I put hands to old life and they remember
like feet to rusted bicycle pedals
but they do not instantly re-find the articulation they’d lost
just as, 20 years from now,
when Armstrong has not rested a sole on a pedal in a decade
he will not bike the tour-de-france leaving nations in his dust

my hands will creak and cramp and occasionally stop altogether
as i try to shake the rust
i will re-oil the gears and keep pushing
massage my joints and pick up the needles
again and again, and maybe I’ll work from patterns for a while
steady stitches until my hands regain their independance from my mind
and start to create as they used to
but never to the same end
never reaching the same excellence
